Survival means different things for different people. For a fully-armoured warrior, even a scratch won't be acceptable, whereas a soldier entering naked into the battlefield would consider himself fortunate to limit his loss to a couple of fingers and toes (especially if they can be grown back, albeit through a boring and painful process), but stay alive for the time being. Besides, it also makes him realise the goodness of having full fingers and toes, something which he had taken for granted all this while.
